Planning data cabling in a strata building.

Planning data cabling in a strata building.

A cabling job in a shared building involves more than the socket inside one tenancy. The route may pass through communications cupboards, risers, ceilings or other common areas. Clear information and the right access can save repeated visits and help everyone understand what the quote covers.

Describe the fault or the new requirement

For a fault, note when the issue started, which services are affected and what the internet provider has already checked. For an installation, explain what equipment needs to connect and where it will be located. Do not assume an unidentified cable is unused or belongs to your tenancy.

Identify the authorised contact

Let the technician know who manages the property and who can approve work in shared areas. Approval requirements vary, so confirm them with the relevant owner, landlord or strata manager before work starts. This is also the time to discuss induction requirements, keys and escort arrangements.

Arrange access to the relevant areas

A visit may need access to the tenancy, communications room, basement or ceiling space. Share any available cable records or building plans. If labels are missing or the route cannot be traced, an investigation may be needed before a firm installation scope can be set.

Agree on the pathway and disruption

A new route can involve more than cable alone. Consider containment, access equipment, operating hours and the effect on customers or residents. Work around pedestrian areas or vehicle routes needs suitable planning. Ask the quote to identify the proposed route and any assumptions about access.

Separate the network service from internal cabling

Your internet provider is the starting point for a service or nbn network fault. Permanent internal telecommunications cabling is a different part of the installation and must be handled by an appropriately registered cabler. nbn notes that internal wiring beyond its connection equipment is not part of the standard network installation.

Keep the completed records useful

Ask what testing, identification and documentation are included. Keep the resulting records with the building’s communications information so future work has a clearer starting point. Good records should identify the completed scope without guessing at unknown existing services.

For a Sydney strata or commercial enquiry, send Marc the site suburb, affected tenancy, access arrangements and photos of the relevant sockets or communications area.
